Overview

Wexford Science and Technology and the University of Pittsburgh partnered to provide a state-of-the-art immunotherapy lab research facility from a renovation of an historic building that once housed production of the Model-T by the Ford Motor Company. EAS worked with state and local officials to provide equipment that was compliant with local codes and tied in to historical building features. EAS participated as a design assist partner to develop a mechanical penthouse to provide by air side and water side building services.

Project Highlights

  • 11,300 SF Penthouse Footprint consisted of (30) modular sections.

  • The penthouse was fabricated in its entirety in EAS’s High Point, NC Facility

  • Air side equipment included two supply air handlers and two energy recovery exhaust air handlers and all associated piping and duct

  • Water side equipment included integration of air-cooled chiller installed adjacent to the penthouse, air elimination systems, heat recovery chiller installation within the penthouse and all associated pumping systems

  • (2) 55,000 CFM Custom air handlers providing lab supply air with filtration, heating, cooling and energy recovery coils

  • (2) 40,000 CFM Custom air handlers providing lab exhaust air recovery with filtration and energy recovery coils

  • (1) 62,000 CFM Custom air handler providing vivarium exhaust air recovery with filtration and energy recovery coils

  • (8) Single inlet, manifolded, high plume lab exhaust fans

  • (2) Main vane axial return fans

  • Installation of (1) process chiller

  • (3) Chilled water pumps

  • (2) Process chilled water pumps with design for (1) future pump

  • (2) Process recovery water pumps with design for (1) future pump

  • (4) Heat recovery pumps

  • (2) Heating hot water pumps

  • (2) Heating hot water recovery pumps

  • (2) Plate and frame process water heat exchangers

  • Glycol feed system

  • (4) Natural gas water heaters

  • Insulated, jacketed and labeled ductwork throughout the penthouse

  • Insulated, jacketed and labeled piping throughout the penthouse and exterior piping on the roof connecting exterior air handlers

  • Fan coil units for space conditioning and ventilation fans

  • Electrical distribution panels within the penthouse to feed equipment, lighting and receptacles and equipment variable frequency drives
